The QA title ladder
Titles in QA describe how much code you write. The further right you move, the closer the role is to software engineering.
QA vs QC: what is the difference?
QA and QC both deal with quality, but they focus on different points in the work. Quality assurance tries to prevent defects before release. Quality control checks the output and catches defects after the work is done. In software job titles, QA is much more common than QC.
- QA: process-focused work such as test planning, regression strategy, automation, and improving how the team ships software.
- QC: output-focused work such as inspecting a finished product, checking it against standards, and rejecting defects.
- In software hiring: "QA engineer," "QA analyst," and "SDET" are common titles. "QC" appears more often in manufacturing, labs, and physical product environments.
- In practice: a manual QA tester may do some QC-style checking during release testing, but the role usually sits inside a broader QA process.
If you want remote software roles, search QA, test automation, and SDET titles first. If a posting says QC, read the duties closely because it may belong to a different industry or a narrower inspection role.
The skills employers ask for
What remote QA postings actually demand
- A framework you can defend. Interviewers ask how you would structure a suite, not trivia about selectors. A public repo of tests beats a certification.
- Comfort in the product team's language. JavaScript shops want JS testers, Python shops want Python. Match one deeply.
- API-level testing. API tests can find service problems earlier and with less setup than a full user-interface test.
- Employers often ask for practical evidence. A test plan, bug report, or automation repository can show skills that a credential alone cannot.
Finding the ones not on Indeed
Product teams may publish QA roles on their own careers pages without distributing them to every large board. Career Hound checks those pages directly and links back to the employer source.
Common questions
Is QA a good fully remote career?
QA can work well remotely because teams can document tests, defects, and reviews. Automation skills can broaden the roles available to you. Manual and automation openings vary by market, so check current postings before choosing a track.
Can I get a remote QA job with no experience?
Manual and contract QA roles can provide an entry into software, but they still require evidence of careful testing. A small portfolio with test plans, bug reports, or automated tests can help an employer assess your work.
What is an SDET exactly?
SDET means Software Development Engineer in Test. An SDET builds test systems and automation as software. Pay and remote-work options vary by company, level, and location.
Is QA being replaced by AI?
AI can automate parts of script generation, test recording, and defect analysis. People still decide what to test, investigate unreliable failures, and judge why a defect matters. Learning automation and AI-assisted testing can make a manual tester useful across a wider range of roles.
Are QA remote jobs hard to get?
Entry-level QA can attract many applicants. Automation and SDET roles ask for more coding experience, which narrows the qualified pool but does not make them easy to obtain. Learn one automation framework well and show how you use it on a real test problem.
Which pays more, QA or QC?
The terms vary by industry. Quality control usually checks outputs against standards, while quality assurance improves the process that produces them. Pay depends more on the industry, technical scope, and seniority than on the label alone.
